Youth Alive! in Garberville this Friday

Emma Worldpeace posted this information in "Death and the Teenager," below. I thought it was important enough to post here on the main page. Emma graduated from South Fork a few years ago and went on to UC Berkeley, where she wrote a paper on death among youth in Southern Humboldt for her senior thesis. She's been doing some great work locally with AmeriCorps, and I look forward to speaking with her a lot more on this issue.

*****

I'd like to invite everyone interested in this very important issue to attend Youth Alive! on March 13th at the Civic Club in Garberville from 5:30-7:30pm. We will be hosting a community dialog on the subject of death among youth with a focus on how we can channel our energies into youth-led projects to prevent future deaths. There will be healthy snacks and a show by local hip hop group Subliminal Sabatoge into the evening. Please come be a part of breaking the silence on this issue and moving forward with our grief.

It was good to see so many faces there, including yours, Cristina. My deepest appreciation to the full spectrum of our community who showed up: therapists, motorcyclists, VFD reps, teachers, nurses, parents, professionals, war vets and especially teenagers. Could you please post the stats that Emma found?

That evening left me feeling shocked, dismayed, angry, confounded, determined, inspired and hopeful all in turns. I hope you'll continue to follow the progress of the smaller groups that began work in specific areas. Thanks for giving this coverage.

It was great to see you too, and I was very heartened by the impressive cross-section of the community that was there.

I'll have a big article in Tuesday's Indie, which I just completed a few hours ago. I'll post portions of it on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
